56 Hotel Industry Statistics on Scale, Performance and Operations

Hotel industry statistics span several different populations: U.S. accommodation and food services, traveler accommodation, hotel-company systems and hotel buildings. The measures below keep those definitions, geographies and periods explicit while covering market scale, performance, labor, global reach, fee economics and energy use.

U.S. Hotel Industry Statistics: Scale and Economic Output

The broadest official U.S. measure in this dataset is NAICS 72, which combines accommodation and food services rather than isolating hotels. The Census Bureau reported $367.1 billion in 2023 revenue and $110.7 billion in annual payroll for that combined sector.

AHLA’s hotel-specific economic projections use a wider guest-spending concept than room revenue. For 2024, AHLA projected $758.6 billion in spending by hotel guests across lodging, transportation, food and beverage, retail and other expenses, plus more than $26 billion in lodging-specific taxes and $29 billion in federal tax revenue.

The tax figures are projections, and the source does not define every included tax. AHLA also reported projected 2024 federal hotel tax revenue of nearly $27.8 billion, compared with $24.3 billion in 2019; the comparison is nominal and the 2024 value is a forecast.

U.S. measure Period Reported value Population or definition
Revenue 2023 $367.1 billion NAICS 72 accommodation and food services
Annual payroll 2023 $110.7 billion NAICS 72 accommodation and food services
Hotel guest spending 2024 forecast $758.6 billion Lodging and other guest expenses
Lodging-specific taxes 2024 forecast More than $26 billion U.S. hotels

The sector and hotel aggregates should not be treated as interchangeable: the first two rows include food services, while the AHLA guest-spending figure includes categories beyond hotel rooms.

AHLA reported average U.S. hotel occupancy of 65.8% in 2019 and 62.9% in 2023, then projected 63.6% for 2024. Its 2024 RevPAR forecast was $101.82, described as nominal, 4% above 2023 and more than 17% above 2019.

U.S. hotel aggregate 2019 observed 2023 observed 2024 forecast
Average occupancy 65.8% 62.9% 63.6%
RevPAR — — $101.82

RevPAR means room revenue divided by available rooms. AHLA’s figures are industry aggregates, whereas Hilton’s figures describe comparable hotels within Hilton’s system, so they are not direct measures of the same population.

Hilton reported 2024 systemwide comparable occupancy of 72.1%, ADR of $159.55 and RevPAR of $115.09. In the United States, Hilton reported 72.5% occupancy, $167.27 ADR and $121.34 RevPAR.

Regional Hilton comparisons show different system results in 2024:

  • Europe recorded 74.6% comparable occupancy and $123.62 comparable RevPAR.
  • Asia Pacific recorded 69.5% comparable occupancy and $76.49 comparable RevPAR.
  • The Middle East and Africa recorded 73.0% comparable occupancy.
  • The Americas excluding the United States recorded 69.0% comparable occupancy.

These are Hilton systemwide comparable metrics, not estimates for every hotel in each region, and the RevPAR values are reported in U.S. dollars.

Hotel Employment Statistics: Jobs, Wages and Labor Recovery

BLS reported that U.S. accommodation employment grew by 79,900 jobs in 2023 and 28,600 jobs in 2024. Despite that growth, employment in December 2024 was still 159,000 jobs below February 2020 on a seasonally adjusted basis.

The narrower traveler-accommodation category grew by 33,000 jobs in 2024, while hotels except casino hotels and motels, identified as NAICS 72111 in the cited BLS data, grew by 25,000 jobs. These categories differ from the broader accommodation series.

BLS’s 2024 accommodation industry table reported 1.7564 million production and nonsupervisory employees and a 3.3% accommodation unemployment rate. The Current Population Survey also estimated that 7.2% of accommodation wage and salary workers were union members and 8.0% were represented by a union.

Labor measure Period Value Definition
Accommodation employment change 2024 +28,600 jobs Seasonally adjusted establishment employment
Traveler accommodation employment change 2024 +33,000 jobs Hotels, motels and other traveler lodging
Production and nonsupervisory employees 2024 1.7564 million U.S. accommodation industry
Unemployment rate 2024 3.3% Accommodation workers, CPS measure
Union membership 2024 7.2% Accommodation wage and salary workers

For 2025 occupational data, BLS listed 420,800 maids and housekeeping cleaners and 247,700 hotel, motel and resort desk clerks. The median hourly wage for hotel, motel and resort desk clerks was $16.82; this is a median wage, not total compensation, and the occupation is not necessarily limited to hotels in every employer classification.

Global Hotel Industry Data: Company Scale and Geographic Reach

The largest company-system disclosures provide a view of branded lodging networks rather than a census of all global hotels. At December 31, 2024, Hilton reported 8,447 properties, 1,268,206 rooms and operations across 140 countries and territories.

Marriott reported 9,361 properties and 1,706,331 rooms at the same date, with a system spanning 144 countries and territories. Marriott also reported a development pipeline of nearly 3,800 hotels representing more than 577,000 rooms; those pipeline figures are approximate disclosures and do not represent operating inventory.

Company system Properties Rooms Countries and territories Date
Hilton 8,447 1,268,206 140 December 31, 2024
Marriott 9,361 1,706,331 144 December 31, 2024

Marriott’s reported system count excludes specified residential, timeshare, Homes & Villas and yacht properties. Hilton and Marriott system metrics therefore describe each company’s own reporting perimeter and should not be generalized to the entire global hotel market.

Hotel Company Revenue Statistics and Fee Economics

Hilton reported $11.174 billion in total revenue in 2024, up from $10.235 billion in 2023. Franchise and licensing fees rose from $2.370 billion in 2023 to $2.600 billion in 2024.

Source: Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. 2024 Form 10-K.

Its 2024 revenue categories show how a global hotel company combines fee streams with property-related and other revenue:

  • Franchise and licensing fees were $2.600 billion.
  • Base and other management fees were $369 million.
  • Incentive management fees were $290 million.
  • Owned and leased hotel revenue was $1.255 billion.
  • Other revenue from managed and franchised properties was $6.428 billion.

These are Hilton consolidated revenue categories, not measures of total sales at every hotel carrying a Hilton brand. The distinction matters because franchising and management arrangements can place hotel-level operating revenue outside the company’s consolidated revenue presentation.

Hotel Energy Statistics: Building Intensity and CHP Operations

The cited Energy Star trend report, discussed in a U.S. Department of Energy and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory study, reported hotel building energy-use intensity ranging from under 100 to over 800 kBtu per square foot. This is a range across hotel buildings, not a current national average.

Source: Quantifying Behavior Driven Energy Savings for Hotels.

The DOE hotel combined heat and power fact sheet adds operational context but does not measure all hotels’ total energy use. In its CHP context, more than 90% of hotels use natural gas as their primary CHP fuel.

Source: Combined Heat and Power Market Sector Fact Sheet Series: Hotels.

DOE describes hotel CHP systems larger than 1 MW as serving all hotel functions in some projects, while systems under 100 kW support specific end uses in some projects. These are example system-size categories rather than market averages, and the CHP figures should not be extended to the full hotel population.
