Retail is measured through several lenses: occupations, company sales, store footprints, digital channels and operating outcomes. The figures below identify the geography, fiscal period and definition for each measure, so company disclosures are not mistaken for industry totals.

Retail Workforce Statistics: Employment and Pay
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wages release provides occupation-level estimates across industries. Its May 2024 release covered about 830 occupations and approximately 410 industry classifications, so these figures describe occupations rather than a complete retail-trade-sector headcount.
| Occupation, United States | May 2024 workers | Mean annual wage | Median hourly wage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retail sales workers | 7,633,890 | $35,470 | $16.20 |
| Cashiers | 3,148,030 | $31,810 | $14.99 |
| First-line supervisors of retail sales workers | 1,113,160 | $52,350 | $22.75 |
Source: Occupational Employment and Wages — May 2024. The annual wage is a BLS estimate, calculated for a year-round, full-time equivalent where applicable; hourly figures are occupational medians, not retail-industry-wide medians.
The wage pattern distinguishes frontline roles from supervision. Retail sales workers had a $16.20 median hourly wage, while first-line supervisors had a $22.75 median, and the cashier median was $14.99.
Retail Sales Data and Comparable-Store Trends
Company filings show how different retail systems report sales and growth. Best Buy’s domestic segment reported $40.1 billion in fiscal 2024 revenue, including approximately $675 million associated with a 53rd week, while its online channel contributed $13.1 billion.
| Company or system | Measure | Period and geography | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best Buy | Domestic revenue | Fiscal 2024, United States | $40.1 billion |
| Best Buy | Online revenue | Fiscal 2024, United States | $13.1 billion |
| Best Buy | Comparable sales change | Fiscal 2024, company | -6.8% |

Domino’s reports retail sales at company-owned and franchised stores, which is different from reported company revenue. In fiscal 2024, its global retail sales reached $19.1242 billion, split between $9.5001 billion in U.S. stores and $9.6241 billion in international stores.
- Domino’s U.S. retail sales growth excluding foreign-currency impact was 5.3% in fiscal 2024.
- Domino’s international retail sales growth excluding foreign-currency impact was 6.5% in fiscal 2024; the figure excludes Russia.
- Domino’s total global retail sales growth excluding foreign-currency impact was 5.9% in fiscal 2024, compared with 5.4% in fiscal 2023 and 3.9% in fiscal 2022.

Retail Store Counts and Physical Footprint
Store counts reveal the variety of formats in retail, but they remain company-specific observations. Dollar General operated 20,022 stores on March 1, 2024 across 48 U.S. states and Mexico, while Best Buy ended fiscal 2024 with 901 domestic stores.
| Retailer | Period | Geography | Store count or footprint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dollar General | March 1, 2024 | 48 U.S. states and Mexico | 20,022 stores |
| Best Buy | End of fiscal 2024 | United States | 901 stores |
| Urban Outfitters | January 31, 2024 | Company-wide | 706 stores |
| Warby Parker | December 31, 2024 | United States and Canada | 276 stores |
| Shoe Carnival | Fiscal 2024 year-end | 36 states and Puerto Rico | 430 stores |

Physical capacity also varies sharply by format. Best Buy’s domestic stores occupied 36.771 million square feet at fiscal 2024 year-end, while Warby Parker’s average retail-store size was approximately 1,700 square feet on December 31, 2024.
Urban Outfitters’ 706 stores included 580 in the United States, 97 in Europe and 29 in Canada at January 31, 2024. Warby Parker’s 276 stores comprised 271 in the United States and five in Canada.
E-commerce and Omnichannel Retail Statistics
Digital activity is reported with different denominators. Best Buy’s $13.1 billion in online revenue was about 32.7% of its $40.1 billion domestic revenue in fiscal 2024; that percentage is derived from the two company-reported figures.
Levi Strauss provides a separate channel view for fiscal 2024 and fiscal 2023:
| Levi Strauss channel measure | Fiscal 2023 | Fiscal 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Direct-to-consumer share of net revenues | 43% | 46% |
| Company-operated e-commerce share of DTC revenue | 20% | 21% |
| Company-operated e-commerce share of total net revenues | 9% | 10% |
Source: Levi Strauss & Co. 2024 Annual Report. Company-operated e-commerce is shown both within direct-to-consumer revenue and as a share of total net revenues; the denominators are not interchangeable.
Shoe Carnival’s comparable physical stores generated approximately $2.8 million in average net sales per store and approximately $246 in net sales per square foot in fiscal 2024, ended February 1, 2025. Both measures include e-commerce sales in close proximity to a physical store, so they are omnichannel measures rather than pure in-store sales.
Retail Product Mix and Geographic Reach
Retail distribution can extend beyond owned stores. Levi Strauss reported that its products were sold in approximately 50,000 retail locations across approximately 120 countries on December 1, 2024, including approximately 3,400 brand-dedicated stores and shop-in-shops.
- Approximately 600 of Levi Strauss’s shop-in-shops were company-operated on December 1, 2024; the broader 3,400 figure includes company-operated and partner-operated locations.
- Levi’s brand products represented approximately 89% of Levi Strauss net revenues in fiscal 2024, compared with approximately 87% in fiscal 2023.
- Dollar General typically priced national-brand and private-brand products at $10 or less in its fiscal 2023 Form 10-K description; this is a typical pricing description, not an all-item price ceiling.

Domino’s 2024 retail sales were nearly evenly divided between its U.S. and international store systems: the international figure exceeded the U.S. figure by $124.0 million. This is an arithmetic difference between the filing’s two reported components, not a market comparison.
Retail Growth, Closures and Operating Outcomes
Retail performance can combine higher sales with a smaller store base. G-III’s retail-operations net sales increased from $137.2 million in fiscal 2023 to $148.4 million in fiscal 2024, an $11.2 million year-over-year increase, while its retail-operations store count fell from 59 to 53 between January 31, 2023 and January 31, 2024.
Best Buy closed 14 domestic stores in fiscal 2023 and 24 in fiscal 2024. Its domestic store count fell from 938 at the end of fiscal 2022 to 901 at the end of fiscal 2024; this change reflects openings and closures in the store roll-forward.
Shoe Carnival’s fiscal 2024 was a 52-week period, compared with 53 weeks in fiscal 2023. That fiscal-calendar difference matters when comparing annual sales or productivity measures.
The company-level measures should be read within their stated boundaries: G-III retail operations are one segment, Best Buy’s store counts cover its domestic large-format roll-forward, and Shoe Carnival’s store and productivity figures describe its own footprint. None of these observations is an industry total or market share.
